History and famous moments
- The first Test here was in 1974–75 against West Indies; India lost by 201 runs.
- Ian Botham scored a century and took 13 wickets in the 1979–80 Jubilee Test, which England won by ten wickets.
- India beat Sri Lanka here in the 2011 World Cup final, the first team to win the World Cup at home.
- Sachin Tendulkar played his last international match here.
- Virat Kohli’s 235 against England in 2016–17 is the highest score by an Indian at the ground.
- Ravi Shastri hit six sixes in an over here, off Baroda’s Tilak Raj in the Ranji Trophy, on the way to the then-fastest double hundred in first-class cricket.
- At the 2023 World Cup Glenn Maxwell made 201 against Afghanistan, Australia’s first ODI double-century, and India beat New Zealand in the semi-final with 397 for 4.
- The stadium was built in about 13 months and opened for the final Test of India’s 1974–75 series against West Indies.
