History and famous moments
- The first Test here, 22–27 November 1974, was the debut of Viv Richards and Gordon Greenidge; West Indies won by 256 runs.
- India’s first Test win here came against Tony Greig’s England in 1976–77.
- The first ODI, on 6 September 1982, went to India by six wickets against Sri Lanka.
- In 2007 Sourav Ganguly (239) and Yuvraj Singh added 300 against Pakistan after India were 61 for 4; India’s 365 for 5 at stumps was the highest first-day score in India.
- Floodlights were installed for the 1996 World Cup; the first match under them was the quarter-final on 9 March 1996, which India won by 39 runs against Pakistan.
- The first game of the IPL, in 2008, was played here.
- Afghanistan played their first Test here, against India, on 14 June 2018.
- The only T20I with two super overs was played here, India against Afghanistan on 17 January 2024, after Rohit Sharma’s fifth T20I century.
- It was the first cricket stadium to generate most of its electricity from solar panels.
