History and famous moments
- The first Test here was India against England in 1934; the first ODI, India against Pakistan, came in 1987, and the first T20I, India against England, in 2011.
- In 1987 it became the second stadium to host a World Cup final.
- A record 110,564 watched the 1996 World Cup semi-final between India and Sri Lanka.
- The 1993 Hero Cup semi-final between India and South Africa was its first day/night match.
- West Indies beat England in the 2016 World Twenty20 final here.
- Two of the great Tests at this ground have their own pages: India v Australia, 2001 and Azharuddin’s 109 against South Africa, 1996.
- The 1987 World Cup final here was the first played outside England.
- Kapil Dev took an ODI hat-trick against Sri Lanka here in 1991.
- India’s first day/night Test was played here on 22 November 2019.
- In the 2016 World Twenty20 final Marlon Samuels made 85 not out, the highest score in a World T20 final.
- At the 2023 World Cup Virat Kohli equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries here, and Australia beat South Africa by 3 wickets in the semi-final.
