History and famous moments
- The first Test in England was played here in 1880, England against Australia; The Oval was the second Test ground after the MCG.
- In 1882 Australia won here by seven runs inside two days, and a mock obituary for English cricket in the Sporting Times led to the Ashes.
- Billy Murdoch made the first Test double-century here in 1884.
- England’s 903 for 7 declared against Australia in August 1938 is the highest Test total at the ground.
- The Oval hosted its 100th Test in July 2017, and in it Moeen Ali took the first Test hat-trick at the ground.
- Len Hutton holds the record for Test runs here (1,521); Ian Botham took the most wickets (52).
- It hosted the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy final.
- The first cricket match on the ground was played in May 1845, on turf brought from Tooting Common.
- In 1868, 20,000 watched the first match of the Aboriginal tour of England, the first tour of England by an overseas side.
- The first ODI here was England against West Indies on 7 September 1973.
- On 20 August 2006 it saw the first forfeited Test, when Pakistan forfeited against England.
- New Zealand’s 398 for 5 on 12 June 2015 is the highest ODI total here.
- It hosted the 2017 Champions Trophy final and the 2023 World Test Championship final.
