History and famous moments
- Cricket’s first double-century was made here: William Ward’s 278 for MCC against Norfolk in 1820, a record until W. G. Grace’s 344 in 1876.
- The touring Australians beat MCC by 9 wickets here in 1878, a shock that began the rivalry between England and Australia.
- Lord’s hosted its first Test in the 1884 Ashes; England won by an innings and 5 runs, with A. G. Steel making the ground’s first Test century and Edmund Peate its first five-wicket haul.
- The Second Test of the 1938 Ashes was the first Test ever televised.
- Its first ODI, in 1972, went to Australia by 5 wickets; three years later it hosted the first men’s World Cup final, won by West Indies against Australia.
- Graham Gooch made the first Test triple-century at Lord’s, 333 against India in 1990.
- England beat New Zealand here in the 1993 Women’s World Cup final.
- The present ground, Thomas Lord’s third, opened in 1814; Frederick Woodbridge made its first century, 107, in August 1815.
- The first Oxford v Cambridge University Match was played here in 1827.
- The 1948 Ashes Test here drew a gross attendance of 132,000, then a record for a Test in England.
- The first women’s match at Lord’s, England against Australia in August 1976, went to England by eight wickets.
- India beat West Indies by 43 runs here in the 1983 World Cup final.
- Its 100th Test, in June 2000, saw 21 wickets fall on the second day.
- Netherlands beat England with the last ball of the first T20I here, at the 2009 World Twenty20, and Pakistan won that tournament’s final at Lord’s.
- The 2019 World Cup final here, England against New Zealand, ended in a tie with both sides on 241 after 50 overs.
- Ireland bowled England out for 85 on the first morning of their 2019 Test here, then were all out for 38, the lowest Test total at Lord’s.
