1983 World Cup Final, India vs West Indies at Lord’s: Relive It, and Where to Watch
West Indies had won both World Cups so far and were in their third straight final. India had never reached one, and started the day at odds of 66–1. By evening they were world champions.
West Indies won the toss and put India in against arguably the best fast-bowling attack in the world. Only Krishnamachari Srikkanth, with 38 off 57 balls, passed 30, and India were all out for 183 in 54.4 overs. Andy Roberts took three wickets. A target of 184 looked comfortable.
It wasn’t. Balwinder Sandhu bowled Gordon Greenidge early, and after Viv Richards raced to 33 off 28 balls, he top-edged Madan Lal and Kapil Dev ran back from mid-on to take the catch. Madan Lal also removed Desmond Haynes and Larry Gomes, Kapil caught Clive Lloyd, and West Indies slid to 76/6. Mohinder Amarnath broke the last stand worth anything, removing Jeff Dujon and Malcolm Marshall, Kapil trapped Andy Roberts lbw, and Amarnath had Michael Holding lbw to finish it: West Indies all out for 140.
Amarnath, with 26 runs and 3/12, was Man of the Match. In front of 24,609 at Lord’s, India had won their first World Cup, and Indian cricket was never the same again.
The moments

- Amarnath’s 3/12. Seven overs of medium pace, three wickets, and the Man of the Match award.
- The underdogs. 66–1 at the start of the final, against the two-time champions.
