History and famous moments
- The first Test here, 21–26 November 1959, went to Australia by 7 wickets, with Richie Benaud and Alan Davidson to the fore.
- England won the first ODI, on 13 January 1978, by 6 wickets against Pakistan.
- Sri Lanka beat Australia by 7 wickets here in the 1996 World Cup final; Aravinda de Silva was player of the match.
- It was the first stadium in Pakistan with modern floodlights and their own standby generators.
- In 2025 it hosted a Champions Trophy semi-final, the first ICC tournament in Pakistan for 29 years.
- Peter Petherick of New Zealand took the ground’s first Test hat-trick, against Pakistan, on 9 October 1976.
- It was rebuilt for the 1996 World Cup by the architect Nayyar Ali Dada, raising capacity from 21,500 to over 34,000.
- On 3 March 2009 the Sri Lankan team’s convoy was attacked near the stadium; Zimbabwe’s tour in May 2015 was the first by a Full Member since, and brought international cricket back to Pakistan.
- The 2017 Pakistan Super League final here was the first PSL match played in Pakistan.
- Pakistan’s 375 for 3 against Zimbabwe on 26 May 2015 is the highest ODI total at the ground.
